SafeGold: who holds the gold, and which apps run on it

SafeGold is the name behind the gold button in PhonePe, Amazon Pay and a long list of jewellers and banks. It works differently from a refiner: its protection comes from a vault and a trustee arrangement. This guide explains that structure, who uses it, and how to judge it. We sell Augmont gold, not SafeGold, so we have no stake in praising or knocking it.

Who is behind SafeGold

SafeGold is a product of Digital Gold India Private Limited. When PhonePe launched gold with it in December 2017, PhonePe described the company as institutionally owned, with Gaurav Mathur as SafeGold's managing director at the time. SafeGold says the World Gold Council, the gold industry's market development body, holds a minority stake. SafeGold names no refinery of its own; it buys 24K gold at the live price on your behalf and holds it through the structure below.

How the vault and the trustee protect you

SafeGold stores customers' metal with Brink's, the secure logistics company, and appoints an independent trustee, Vistra ITCL. SafeGold says the gold is held separately from the company's own assets, and that the security trustee holds a charge over it ahead of other creditors until it is delivered. In plain words: if SafeGold itself failed, the trustee's claim on the gold comes before the claims of anyone SafeGold owes money to.

Three companies: SafeGold sells, Brink's vaults, and Vistra ITCL holds the charge. Logos are their owners' trademarks, shown only to identify them; each links to the company's own site.

Which apps use SafeGold

SafeGold says it serves over 200 business partners. In September 2026 it named these:

Some of the brands SafeGold names as partners. Logos are their owners' trademarks, shown only to identify them; each links to the company's own site.
  • Payments: PhonePe (since 2017, alongside MMTC-PAMP), Amazon Pay, BharatPe.
  • Finance: JioFinance, CRED, KreditBee, Stashfin.
  • Jewellers: Tanishq, CaratLane, BlueStone.
  • Banks, through the Nuclei banking platform: SBI, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, IndusInd, Federal Bank and Canara Bank.

Two cautions. This is SafeGold's own list, and some names on it also appear with other providers. Gullak, for one, is on it, yet Gullak's own site says its gold comes from Augmont. And SafeGold says Paytm and Google Pay use MMTC-PAMP, not SafeGold. For who powers which app, see SafeGold vs Augmont vs MMTC-PAMP.

Is SafeGold safe?

Structurally, SafeGold answers the questions that matter in public: a named vault, a named trustee with a stated first charge, and quarterly confirmation of balances. What no structure changes is regulation: SEBI said in November 2025 that digital gold sits outside its purview, so none of its investor protections apply. Check the spread and the exit in the app you buy through, because those are set by the app, then run the nine checks.
